Built in 1968 by world famous architect Zanine Caldas, the Cliffside estate sits on an ocean-front cliff. Considered an architectural sculpture, Zanine focused his design to offer unlimited views of the sea and horizon without visual obstruction. Despite the steep terrain on which it sits, the home exhibits uncompromising horizontality and blends influences from Brazilian colonial style, with high ceilings and exposed roof tiles, and interlocking planes typical of the architecture of Japan, where Zanine had returned shortly before beginning his design of the space.
Known locally for it’s historic Bossa Nova gatherings of the late 60’s, Cliffiside has hosted the likes of Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Dorival Caymmi to name a few. Other famous guest include T.I., Iggy Azalea, Steve McQueen and Jack Nicholson. Most recently, Cliffside was used as a primary shoot location for an Elis Regina film as well as a super party for honored guest, Phillipe Starck.
